Hippos or hippopotamuses are animmals that appear in the Jungle Bunch Universe

Description[]

Hippos are among the largest living land mammals, being only smaller than elephants and some rhinoceroses. Amongst the extant African megafauna, behind the two African elephant species, they average smaller than the white rhinoceros but are larger by body mass than the black rhinoceros and the giraffe. Mean adult weight is around 1,500 kg (3,310 lb) and 1,300 kg (2,870 lb) for bulls and cows respectively,[23][24] very large bulls can reach 2,000 kg (4,410 lb) and exceptional bulls weighing 2,660 kg (5,860 lb)[23], 3,200 kg (7,050 lb)[25] and 4,500 kg (9,920 lb) (in captivity)[26] have been reported. Bulls appear to continue growing throughout their lives while cows reach maximum weight at around age 25.[27]

Physical Characteristics[]

Hippopotamuses are large heavily built animals with short stubby limbs. Most are grey or a variation of grey/brown. They have big teeth sticking out of their mouth.

Information[]

The hippopotamus (meaning "river horse") is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal. After the elephant and rhinoceros, the hippopotamus is the third largest land mammal. The hippopotamus is semi-aquatic, inhabiting rivers, lakes and mangrove swamps. Hippos spend most of their days wallowing in the water or the mud, with the other members of their pod.

The water serves to keep their body temperature down, and to keep their skin from drying out. With the exception of eating, most of hippopotamuses' lives —from childbirth, fighting with other hippos, to reproduction— occur in the water. Hippos leave the water at dusk and travel inland, sometimes up to eight kilometers (five miles), to graze on short grass, their main source of food. The hippo's proportions reflect its sedentary, amphibious existence. Its plump and bulky body is set on short, stumpy legs, with each foot having four toes.
